TO DISCOVER

Following tradition, Portuguese families gather for dinner on December 24, where cod dishes are served, although roast turkey and other meat dishes - which are normally enjoyed in the following days - have started to be included in the menus. As a dessert you can't miss the Bolo-Rei (King's Cake) stuffed with candied fruit and dried fruit, as well as other typical seasonal sweets such as broas castelares and the traditional fried filhós, dreams and pancakes.
At midnight the Missa do Galo (Mass of the Rooster) is celebrated and in churches as in homes there is a special space dedicated to the crib, where the environment in which Jesus was born is recreated, as conceived by St. Francis of Assisi in XIII century. The crib is very popular in Portugal. Christmas presents are exchanged after midnight or on the morning of December 25, depending on the habits of each family. In the past, before in Portuguese Christmas it was Santa Claus who left the gifts under the tree, it was the Child Jesus who brought them. Before going to sleep the children left their slippers on the fireplace and, in the morning, once they woke up, they discovered what surprises he had left for them. Assuming they've done well during the year, of course...
On the night of December 24, in cities such as Bragança, Guarda, Castelo Branco and other small towns, a large bonfire is organized in the churchyard. It is a meeting point for exchanging Merry Christmas wishes between friends and neighbours.
